Support for Erwin (name changed) from Kenya after a high voltage accident

Erwin is 15 years old and comes from Kenya. In July 2024, he suffered a serious high-voltage accident while trying to retrieve a toy from a roof using a metal pole. He caused an explosion and was engulfed in flames, suffering severe third-degree burns from his chest down covering almost 60% of his body. In addition to his abdomen, his arms were particularly affected. His right hand suffered severe muscle and nerve injuries and is currently virtually unusable.

Erwin survived, even surviving sepsis and countless skin transplants. Although he received proper treatment in Nairobi's clinics, there is no adequate rehabilitation program in Kenya that would help him recover, especially in regaining the use of his right hand or training his left. Furthermore, the medical conditions in Kenya are lacking for surgically restoring nerve function in his right hand.

Thanks to the generous assistance of ANDO eV and their contacts in East Africa, we were able to arrange physical and occupational therapy treatment for Erwin at the ProUganda Orthopedic Center in Kiyunga, Uganda. The team's hand specialists worked hard to restore basic functions to Erwin's right hand and improve his limited left hand. At the same time, Erwin met with the Interplast medical team at the Jinja Centre for Reconstructive and Global Surgery to explore possible surgical options.

The Florian Lex Foundation covered the costs of Erwin and his companion’s trip to Uganda, their stay and his treatment.
