Support from Pro Uganda and their New Life Orthopaedic Center, Mukono, Uganda
Pro Uganda was founded over 10 years ago to help people in Uganda and surrounding areas, especially those with disabilities, by providing orthopedic care. Under Pro Uganda's leadership, the New Life Orthopaedic Center was established in Mukono, Uganda. Its overarching goal is to restore quality of life and provide holistic care to impoverished amputees through prostheses, other orthopedic aids, physiotherapy, and psychotherapy. Some of the amputations are due to burn injuries.
Furthermore, in Mukono, Ugandan specialists are trained and further educated to improve the inadequate care for amputees throughout the country. The workshop produces orthopedic aids for young and adult patients and trains patients in their use. Local trainees are also trained as orthopaedic mechanics. A new competence center with a training workshop, seminar and office spaces, as well as additional aftercare services, completes the comprehensive range of services.
The Florian Lex Foundation supports the New Life Orthopaedic Center through a fund that provides financial assistance to burn victims who cannot afford prostheses and/or physiotherapy. This ensures that every burn victim who has undergone amputation can receive orthopedic care and be reintegrated into society, regardless of their financial background.
In early 2026, the first patients were able to receive treatment from this fund. For example, Alfons from South Sudan, who lost both hands and had his feet mutilated in a high-voltage electrical accident, was fitted with special shoes that allowed him to walk again. The next indigent patient is already on the waiting list.
